The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a helping hand and a roof in a storm for those who are suffering from disabilities. We see numerous people daily in our lives sitting on footpaths, begging or looking for someone who can help them recover from their disability.

That is why there is an International Day for People with disability on the 3rd of December. However, SASSA has something to share with people with temporary or permanent disability. There is a grant called “SASSA Disability Grant” for all disabled persons living in a miserable life.

This guide will help you understand what this grant is and how you can apply and get R2,315 from the SASSA agency.

What is the SASSA Disability Grant?

The SASSA Disability Grant is a social support system for people living with disabilities in South Africa. This grant was first introduced in 1937, making it the first social security grant in the country. 

It was designed to help disabled individuals who are unable to work due to their condition. Today, it continues to provide financial assistance, giving recipients R2,315 per month.

There are two types of disability grants:

Permanent Disability: The first is for permanently disabled individuals. These are people whose disability cannot be treated or cured, and they need long-term support. 

Temporary Disability: The second type is for temporarily disabled individuals. This applies to people who are disabled for more than six months but can recover fully with treatment or therapy.

To qualify for this grant, applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees. They must also meet SASSA’s medical assessment requirements, which evaluate the severity and duration of the disability. 

The application involves submitting medical records, proof of income, and identification documents to the nearest SASSA office.

The SASSA Disability Grant ensures that people with disabilities can cover their basic needs, such as food, medical care, and shelter. SASSA Disability Grant Eligibility Criteria 2026

To qualify for the SASSA Disability Grant, applicants must meet specific requirements. These rules ensure that only those who genuinely need help receive support. Below is a detailed explanation of the eligibility criteria:

Age Requirement

Applicants must be between 18 and 59 years old. This means only adults who are legally able to apply and are not yet eligible for the older persons’ grant can receive this support.

South African Citizenship or Residency

Applicants must have a valid South African ID. This confirms that they are South African citizens, permanent residents, or recognized refugees living in the country.

Income Limits

The grant is intended for people with low income. To qualify:

  • A single applicant must earn no more than R86,280 per year.
  • A married applicant must earn no more than R172,560 per year.

SASSA uses these limits to ensure that support goes to those who truly need financial help.

Disability Requirement

Applicants must have a permanent disability (cannot be treated) or a temporary disability that lasts more than six months. SASSA requires medical proof to confirm the condition.

No Other Government Grants

The applicant must not be receiving any other government grant. This ensures fair distribution of resources and avoids double support for the same person.

Documents Needed

South African ID

You must provide a valid South African ID. If you are a permanent resident or refugee, you must submit your official residency or refugee documents. This proves that you are legally living in South Africa.

Proof of Income for SASSA Disability Grant

Payslips

If you are employed, submit your latest payslips. Usually, the last three months’ payslips are enough. They show your monthly income clearly.

Bank Statements

If you earn money through other means, you can provide bank statements. These statements should cover at least three months and show your total income.

Affidavit for Unemployed

If you are not employed or do not earn a regular income, you can submit a sworn affidavit. This document declares your financial status under oath.

Pension or Other Allowances

If you receive any pension or other support from family or organizations, provide official proof. SASSA will add this to calculate your total income.

Business Income Proof

If you run a small business, provide documents such as sales records, invoices, or financial statements. These help SASSA understand your real earnings.

Proof of Disability

This is one of the most important requirements. You must submit a medical report from a government-approved doctor. The report must be attested and certified, confirming your disability.

It must clearly state whether the disability is permanent (cannot be treated) or temporary (lasting more than six months). SASSA may ask for additional medical tests or assessments if needed.

Proof of Marital Status (if applicable)

If you are married, you must provide a marriage certificate. This helps SASSA calculate your household income.

How to Apply for Disability Grant?

Follow these steps to apply via SASSA office.

Decide Who Will Submit Your Application

If you cannot go to the SASSA office yourself, a close blood relative (parent, sibling, or adult child) can submit the application on your behalf. They must carry your original ID to prove their authority. If you are able, you can submit the application yourself.

Visit Your Local SASSA Office

  1. Go to the SASSA office in your area.
  2. Ask specifically for the Disability Grant Department. This ensures you reach the correct counter.
  3. Request the Application Form
  4. Tell the staff: “I need the Disability Grant application form. They will give you the correct form to fill out.

Fill Out the Form

  1. Complete all sections carefully.
  2. Write clearly and provide accurate information.
  3. If you have trouble understanding any part, ask the staff for help to fill the form correctly.

Attach All Required Documents

  • Include attested copies only of all documents (do not submit originals unless asked).
  • Documents include ID, proof of income, a medical report from a government-approved doctor, bank details, and any other supporting papers.
  • Double-check that nothing is missing, as incomplete submissions may be rejected.

Submit the Application

  1. Once everything is ready, submit the form at the counter.
  2. After submission, SASSA will give you an Application ID (AppID).
  3. Keep this AppID safe. You can use it to track your application status.
