SASSA Beneficiaries Face Trouble Under New Treasury Budget Rules

In June 2025, SASSA introduced some new rules for grant recipients. These updates aim to make the payment system smoother and faster. They also ensure that only people who qualify receive the grants.

However, not everyone is happy with the changes. Bukelwa Hans from the Universal Basic Income Coalition warned that these new rules might make life harder for some people.

In an interview with eNCA, she explained that stricter approval processes could leave more vulnerable people without support. She fears that the changes may push some families deeper into poverty.

When I checked my own SASSA status after the update, I noticed the website asked for extra details. It took a few minutes, but the process was clear. For many, these small steps are easy. But for people without access to the internet or proper ID documents, it can be a real challenge.

SASSA says the updates are necessary to protect the system and reduce errors. But as Hans points out, it’s important to balance efficiency with support for those who need it most.

SASSA New Rules for Beneficiaries in June 2025

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has updated its rules for applying for grants. This includes the SRD R370 grant, the Older Persons’ grant, and the Child Support grant.

New Document Requirements for 2025

All applicants and current beneficiaries must pass SASSA’s biometric verification. After that, these documents are required:

  • Certified ID, special permit, or refugee document
  • Active bank account details
  • A working phone number for SMS alerts from SASSA
  • Proof of residence, no older than three months

Deadline: All documents must be submitted by 31 August 2025. Missing this date may delay your grant.

When I submitted my updated documents last month, I had to visit the bank to confirm my account details. It was quick, but it reminded me how important it is to have everything ready.

SRD R370 Grant May Become Universal Basic Income (UBI)

There are strong indications that the SRD grant will change into a Universal Basic Income. The eligibility rules will stay the same as for the SRD grant. However, the UBI payment is expected to be R510.

Verification Checks Before Payment

  • Before releasing any grant, SASSA will now verify:
  • ID with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA)
  • Active Postbank or bank account details
  • Biometric verification
  • Income details and UIF information

These checks are designed to make sure grants reach only those who qualify. It may feel like extra steps, but they help prevent delays and mistakes in payments.
