SRD COVID-19 Social Relief Grant Application Eligibility Criteria 2026
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides financial support to around 9 million citizens through a monthly payment of R370. This number grows every month, with over 8,0000 new applications for the SRD grant being submitted.
To ensure fairness in using taxpayers’ money, SASSA has set clear rules for who can qualify. This grant is not open to everyone, so people with a stable income or wealth cannot claim it.
Only unemployed, low-income, or disabled citizens can get SASSA grants.
Here are the SASSA SRD grant eligibility rules for 2026 applicants must follow:
- Citizenship or Residency: Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. Asylum seekers, refugees, and special permit holders can also apply.
- Age Requirements: Applicants should be between 18 and 59 years old.

- Other Financial Support: Applicants must not receive help from NSFAS or UIF at the same time.
- Living in South Africa: Applicants must live in South Africa while applying and receiving payments.
