SASSA Black Card Activation
So your SASSA Black card has arrived to you, right? Before you can spend your grant money, you need to activate it first. Don’t worry if you’re unsure how to do it, I’ll guide you through the steps. When I got my card last month, I had the same question, so I know how confusing it can feel at first.
I’ve been helping with SASSA card activations for over 2 years. Dozens of my friends get the SRD R370 grant, and they always ask me for help when activating their cards.
Because of this, I have plenty of experience guiding people through their first card activation. I’ll also share some important tips to keep in mind before you activate your new card.
How to Activate a New SASSA Black Card?
Here’s how to do it step by step:
Step 1: Sign the Card
Flip your card to the back and sign the signature strip. This keeps your card safe and ready to use.
Step 2: Find the Nearest Postbank ATM
On your phone, dial 120355#. This code will show you the nearest Postbank ATM where you can activate your card.
Step 3: Go to the ATM and Insert Your Card
Take your card to the ATM. Insert it into the machine. Make sure this is your first time using it.
Step 4: Begin the Activation Process
The ATM will ask:
- “Do you want to activate your card?”
- Press ‘Yes’ or ‘Continue’ to begin the activation process.
Step 5: Set a 4-Digit PIN
- Next, pick a 4-digit PIN for your card.
- Type it carefully on the ATM keypad.
- The ATM will ask you to enter the same PIN again to confirm. Do this to finish setting your PIN.
Step 6: Activation Complete
The ATM will display a message like:
- “Your card is activated and ready to use.”
- Take your card out. Now it’s fully activated and ready for use.
💳 What Can You Do After Activation?
After activation, you can use your SASSA Black Card to
- Withdraw your SRD R370 grant at any ATM.

- Never write your PIN on the card or on paper in your wallet.
- If the ATM doesn’t ask you to activate your card, go to a SASSA office or Post Office for help.
- Don’t hand your card to strangers who say they can help. Always use official SASSA channels.
