SASSA Social Grant Payments Are Increased for 2025
On 12 March 2025, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana delivered the new budget speech in Cape Town. In his address, he announced that the National Treasury released R35.2 billion to support SASSA’s social grant programs for 2025.
This major allocation allowed SASSA to increase several grant amounts. In this update, you will learn the new payment values and see the steps you can follow to apply for these grants and receive the support you need.
SASSA Social Grants in 2025
TThe South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has offered social grants to citizens since 2005. Below are the main types of SASSA grants available in 2025:
Older Persons Grant
Disability Grant
Child Support Grant
Foster Child Grant
SRD R370 Grant
Care Dependency Grant
These grants help people who face financial hardship. A report from SA News report shows that South Africa’s unemployment rate in 2025 stands at 31.9%, compared to 32.1% in 2024. This small drop is partly linked to the support provided through SASSA’s social grants.
SASSA Social Grant Payments Are Increased for 2025
Now, let’s have a look at the increased payments of SASSA social grants in 2025:
| Grant Name | Increase Amount | New Payment Amount |
| Old Age Pension Grant (60 to 75 years old) | R130 | R2,315 |
| Old Age Pension Grant (above 75 years old) | R135 | R2,335 |
| Foster Child Grant | R70 | R1,250 |
| Care Dependency Grant | R130 | R2,315 |

Will the SASSA SDR Grant Increase to R400 in 2025?
SASSA is currently looking at the possibility of raising the SRD grant to R400 because many people feel the R370 amount is still too low. Even though the payment went up from R350 in April 2024, it does not cover basic needs as prices continue to rise.
There is no final decision yet, but the conversations are moving forward, and the government understands the pressure people are facing.
The extra money set aside for social grants in 2025 shows that the National Treasury wants to strengthen financial support. Many beneficiaries are hopeful that the increase to R400 will be approved soon so they can manage their monthly expenses with a little more ease.
